UCLA Extension has maintained registration with Certified Financial Planner Board of Standards Inc. (CFP Board) to offer certificates in financial planning.
The CFP Board re-certification announcement letter identified the strengths of the UCLA Extension Personal Financial Planning Certificates: well-qualified instructors and support staff; high level of retention; curriculum consistency; strong advisory board; partnership with local FPA chapter; UCLA academic oversight and assessment by relevant officers; and the long history and reputation of UCLA Extension.
“CFP Board is pleased to have an educational institution of the caliber of UCLA Extension offering a CFP Board Registered Program,” said Ray Ferrara, CFP®, chair of CFP Board’s Board of Directors. “As student interest in financial planning as a career continues to grow, we anticipate that the UCLA Extension programs will contribute significantly to the number of qualified candidates seeking to attain the CFP® certification, the standard of excellence for competent and ethical financial planning.”
Rich Burnes, program director for Accounting and Finance, states the CFP Board re-certification is notable. Burnes offers this assessment, “the strength of the curriculum, along with flexibility formats, internships, capstone and mentoring by instructors, distinguishes the Personal Financial Planning Certificate. Our financial planning certificate graduates are fully prepared for practice and the CFP® Certification Examination.”
The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports employment of personal financial advisors is projected to grow 27 percent from 2012 to 2022. The driver of growth is the aging population, as baby boomers approach retirement and seek planning advice from personal financial planners.
The two certificates in Personal Financial Planning at UCLA Extension – Evening/Online & Accelerated Online – are available in flexible formats (classroom and instructor-led online) with students completing the curriculum between from 9 months to 2 years. Courses cover the financial planning process: from retirement benefits, insurance, and investments to estate planning and taxes.
An independent certifying organization, CFP Board owns the CFP® and Certified Financial PlannerTM certification marks, which it awards to individuals who meet its education, examination, experience, ethics and other requirements. Students completing the financial planning program at UCLA Extension will have met the Education requirement for CFP® Certification Examination administered by CFP Board. Over 360 programs at more than 225 institutions partner with the CFP Board.
